SPRINGFIELD IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) reported provisional figures today which show 13 persons lost their lives in 12 traffic crashes over the Labor Day weekend. During the same four-day period last year there were 15 fatalities as a result of 15 crashes on Illinois roadways.

Troopers issued more than 15,415 citations and written warnings during the four-day Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) campaign, including 181 DUI arrests. Troopers also provided assistance to more than 1,983 motorists during the holiday weekend.

ISP Director Sam W. Nolen reminds motorists that the goal of the ISP is to safeguard the public by reducing the number of vehicle crashes and resulting fatalities. Operation C.A.R.E. is one of the partnerships utilized to obtain that objective.
