Press Release Date: February 6, 2012    || Archived February 11, 2013

CHICAGO -- ISP Officials are conducting an investigation of a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Monday morning, February 6. At approximately 2:18 a.m., witnesses contacted police after observing a 1996 Infiniti traveling northbound on I-294, and entering I-80 westbound. After a short distance the driver completed a u-turn and began traveling eastbound in the I-80 westbound lanes. Based on witness statements, the Infiniti was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a 1999 Ford Wagon head-on in the I-80 westbound lanes, east of Kedzie.  Both vehicles were engulfed in flames as a result of the fatal collision.

Eduardo Rodriguez, 31 of Chicago, was the sole survivor from the engulfed Infiniti.  Rodriguez remains in stable condition at an area hospital.  The driver, Gustavo Vargas, 29 of Berwyn, front passenger, Jorge Pina, 27 of Chicago, and rear seat passenger Armando Ruiz, 29 of Berwyn, did not survive.

The driver of the 1999 Ford Wagon and sole occupant, Jason Wepsiec, 35 of Joliet, is also deceased.

Officials warn that this is the 2nd wrong way driving accident within a week where alcohol was a contributing factor.  All passengers and drivers involved in the fatal crash were wearing seatbelts.
