SPRINGFIELD, IL – State, county, and municipal law enforcement agencies are participating in a program that will save lives and prevent serious injuries. Click It or Ticket is a new enforcement and education campaign aimed at the part-time seat belt user. Research shows that 30 percent of the motoring public falls into the part-time user category. The challenge of the program is to increase the use of seat belts and save lives. If the seat belt compliance rate increases by just 10 percent, an additional 73 deaths and 2,465 injuries would be prevented every year. The seat belt compliance rate in Illinois is currently at 65.9 percent.

Click It or Ticket is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, Illinois Sheriffs' Association, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and more than 250 law enforcement agencies statewide.

Click It or Ticket will use television, radio, and billboard public service announcements to reach out to part-time users that fall in the 18-24 and 25-34 age group. Along with the educational side of the program, more than 250 law enforcement agencies will crack down on seat belt violators with six high-intensity enforcement periods throughout the year. The first of these enforcement periods will be conducted in conjunction with the Operation ABC Mobilization: America Buckles Up Children campaign period between May 22 and 29. The second week of the Click It or Ticket enforcement period runs May 30 through June 4.
