|SPRINGFIELD, IL - The Illinois State Police (ISP) released provisional figures today indicating 14 persons lost their lives as a result of 13 fatal crashes on Illinois roadways during the Memorial Day weekend. This total compares to 17 fatalities and 16 crashes over the 2000 weekend.|
The Illinois State Police issued nearly 17,588 citations and written warnings over the four-day period, including 178 DUI arrests. In addition, troopers provided assistance to more than 1,700 motorists.
ISP Director Sam W. Nolen pointed out the Illinois State Police issued nearly 2,600 citations for safety belt and child restraint violations as part of the Click It or Ticket initiative and Operation ABC (America Buckles-Up Children) Mobilization. The Click It or Ticket enforcement period, which began May 20, concludes June 2. In addition, to the ISP, over 400 local law enforcement agencies are participating in the initiative.
Nolen said, "The goal of holiday public awareness and enforcement campaigns is to reduce traffic deaths and injuries. Without these campaigns, these unfortunate weekend statistics would undoubtedly be much higher".
